Description

Increasingly, you see exercises being done with large exercise balls in fitness centers and training programs.

Often these are gym balls Swiss Balls (abbreviated SB). But you will also come across other names, such as Stability Ball, Thera Ball, Exercise Ball, Gym Ball and Fit Ball. These balls originally come from Switzerland and hence the name Swiss Balls. They have been known for more than 40 years and are often used in therapeutic settings, such as physiotherapy and exercise therapy. SB training is certainly not only suitable for the elderly or people with disabilities. In recent years, SBs have been used in all kinds of training programs. You will also come across the SB in many strength training programs of top athletes.

  • Diameter SF Ball: 65 cm
  • Body length: 168-188 cm
  • Arm length: 66 - 81 cm

Practical training tips:

  • Make sure you have enough space around you. It can happen that you lose your stability or balance and fall off the ball. For some exercises you also need a considerable space.
  • Make sure your feet are firmly on the ground and cannot slip. Place a non-slip mat underneath or wear shoes that do not slip.
  • You can make the exercises harder or more difficult by creating more unstable situations or by increasing the external load (using dumbbells, elastic bands, barbells).
  • The more air in the ball, the more unstable the ball is. Beginners should not pump the ball up too hard. If you have more experience or the exercises are easy for you, then add more air.
  • You can vary the degree of stability by placing your standing legs closer together. For example, do a crunch while lying/sitting on the SB with your feet 50 cm apart and compare that with feet right next to each other. Feet next to each other is less stable and therefore the training becomes more difficult or better.
  • A general rule of thumb is to do SB exercises after your regular exercises. First load the primary muscles heavily and then do the exercise with the SB to train the stabilizing muscles. If the primary muscles are tired, you train the stabilizers even better.
  • There are rings that allow you to sit more stable on the ball if you want to use it as a chair (advice not to use it for too long). These rings are also useful for storing the balls (for example on each other).
